Idaho Buys More Lethal Injection Drugs

With two trials in Idaho that could end in the death penalty, the state of Idaho has purchased three more doses of the lethal injection drug pentobarbital from an undisclosed buyer.

The total cost of the three doses amounting to $100,000 -- more than double what the state paid for a previous round of doses bought in October 2023.

That brings Idaho's total expenses on lethal injection drugs to $150,000 in the last six months, amounting to a total of six doses per IDOC protocols.

Two doses, prepared for use to execute Thomas Creech earlier this year, expired after the procedure was botched and medical personnel could not establish an intravenous line into Creech.

The decision to purchase more lethal injection drugs, drawing attention to Idaho's passage of law that allows the state to employ a firing squad should lethal injection be ruled inappropriate, or if drugs struggle to be obtained.

Despite the law, and the earmarking of $750,000 of State funds by the legislature for construction of an appropriate facility to carry out firing squad executions, IDOC has said they're struggling to find contractors willing to work on the project.

It remains unclear at this time if Idaho intends to seek another death warrant for Thomas Creech -- the intent behind the most recent purchase remains undisclosed by state officials.
